Social Science Data Service

SSDS Lab

Mission

The Social Science Data Service (SSDS) is a unit of the Institute of Governmental Affairs (IGA). SSDS provides quantitative computing and consulting services and exploits economies of scale to provide cost-effective, specialized resources in support of social science research on the UC Davis campus.

SSDS Computing

SSDS’s research computing services consist of UNIX systems and a small PC lab.  Due to funding constraints, access to these systems is generally restricted to faculty and graduate students in the Departments of Economics, Political Science, and Sociology.

Consulting Services

SSDS provides consulting services on a range of software used in social science research.  Consulting services are available to campus social scientists.  Staff can assist with questions regarding the use of SSDS computers, as well as statistical and data-related programming.  In addition, the staff is knowledgeable about social science data sources.  The SSDS conducts training workshops on data management and statistical computing.

SSDS Advisory Committee

The SSDS Advisory Committee provides guidance in establishing priorities and policies at SSDS. Current representatives are:

Brad Jones (Political Science)
Oscar Jorda (Economics)
Bill McCarthy (Sociology)
Kim Shauman (Sociology)
Ann Stevens (Economic)
Walt Stone (Political Science)
